There aren’t any awards for reading that I could find (but there certainly should be). In the meantime, we’ll just have to make do with this list of awards for well-written writing.
- Booker Prize: Formally known as the Man Booker Prize for Fiction, this annual award goes to the best original English-language novel published in the United Kingdom. Famous winners of the Booker Prize has been awarded to William Golding, Salman Rushdie, Kingsley Amos, and Margaret Atwood.
- **Caldecott Medal: Since 1937, the Randolph Caldecott Medal recognizes the top children’s illustrated in the United States. The award is named for influential 19th Century British illustrator, Randolph Caldecott. Famous winners include Where the Wild Things Are, Jumanji, and The Polar Express.**
- **Newbery Medal: The Association for Library Service to Children annually hands out the John Newbery Medal to "the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children." John Newbery became known as "the Father of children's literature" during the eighteenth century. The first Newbery was given in 1926.**
- **Carnegie Medal: Established in 1936, the Carnegie Medal is the British-version of the Newbery Medal. It was named after American-businessman and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie. The winner gets £500 worth of books donated to a library of their choice.**
- **Nobel Prize for Literature: Like the other Nobel Prizes, the awards are presented to those who have contributed greatly to mankind. Unlike other awards given for individual works, Nobel Prizes are usually given to authors for a body of work.**
- **National Book Award: This is a series of awards given annually in four categories: fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and young people’s literature. As of 1988, they also award lifetime contributions for lifetime service.**
- **National Book Critics Circle Award: This is a set of awards handed out by the National Book Critics Circle (NBCC) annually since 1976. They’re American awards, but they’re given to any book written in English. Categories include fiction, nonfiction, autobiography, biography, poetry and literary criticism.**
- **PEN/Faulkner Award:** Started after William Faulkner donated the winnings of his Nobel Prize. Each year, one winner and four runners-up are selected. One of many awards handed out by the PEN International group—the acronym PEN originally stood for Poets, Essayists, Novelists, but now has been expanded to Poets, Playwrights, Editors, Essayists, and Novelists.
- **Pulitzer Prize:** The Pulitzer Prize is awarded for all sorts of journalism—reporting, writing, editing, political cartoons, and photography. But it also includes a highly prestigious set of awards for fiction, poetry, drama, and music.
- Hugo Award: Given to the best work of science fiction or fantasy works and presented at the World Science Fiction Convention. The award was named after Hugo Gernsback, who founded, Amazing Stories, the premiere science fiction. The award was started in 1955 and now covers a range of categories—from best novel, best fan artist, and best graphic story.
- Nebula Award: Similar to the Hugo, these are given out to science fiction and fantasy works by the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America (SFWA). Started in 1966, eight different categories are awarded to writers each year.
