Once you learn how to read, it only makes sense that you’ll want to read more. Reading is proven to have so many different benefits (which we’ll discuss later in this book). Most people resolve themselves to consume more books.

But how? Reading takes time, and people are busy. There are endless things to read but in a finite amount of time. So, how are you supposed to find the time and energy to read more books? There are a few simple but effective ways to read more.

  1. Always have a book with you—you never know when you need it
  2. Use technology, like reading apps and e-readers
  3. Find those little pockets of time when you’re not doing anything else—like waiting in line at the grocery store or waiting for your hot pocket to heat up in the microwave
  4. Have the next book ready to go when you finish one
  5. Read a variety of books to keep from getting bored
  6. Read magazines and newspapers to stay updated on current events
  7. Listen to audiobooks
  8. Don’t finish books you aren’t enjoying—quit and move on to something better. Nancy Pearl suggests the Rule of 50: if you don’t like a book after 50 pages, put it down.
  9. Read in distraction-free places
  10. Take public transportation to work and read during the commute
  11. Watch less TV and other distracting activities that aren’t reading
  12. Stay up late reading, or wake up earlier to read more
  13. Read instead of going on social media
  14. Schedule time to read during your day
  15. Join a book club because reading is better in community
  16. Visit the local library and borrow a few books
