Even the most hardcore bibliophile can get tired of books after a time. Doing too much of anything starts to get old after a little while. Reading loses its shine and you start to lose interest.
Maybe that’s not you, but if you’ve ever felt these symptoms of fatigue, there are a few things you can do to combat it.
- Take a break. Yes, you’re allowed to not read on occasion. Go on vacation from books—even if it’s just for a week or two. You’ll probably miss them.
- Change what you read. Maybe you’re bogged down because you’ve been reading too much of the same thing. Switch it up with more non-fiction (or fiction). Read shorter (or longer works). Try some graphic novels or audiobooks for a change of format.
- Join a book club. Sometimes the burnout stems from isolation. Reading by yourself can be exciting, or lonely. Reading with a community can help bring new energy.
- Talk to a therapist. If your book blues are related to something deeper, talk to a professional. This might be part of something more serious.
- **Avoid burnout. The best way solution to burnout is to avoid it in the first place. Don’t read books you don’t like. Build a sustainable reading habit. Make sure you enjoy reading.**
