Everyone is looking for a quick fix. There is no quick or easy way to read better. But there are a few simple steps you can take to easily improve your reading habits. Below is a collection of some of these ideas. This is by no means comprehensive, but hopefully it’s helpful.
- Remove distractions—including other people and your phone.
- Write in your book or take notes to increase retention.
- If you’re alone, try reading aloud. Or read aloud even if you’re not alone.
- Quit reading a book if you don’t like it.
- Read different kinds of books and multiple books at once.
- Skim the book description and reviews before jumping straight in.
- Use multiple bookmarks to save multiple places in a book.
- Set a deadline for yourself to finish a book. This is why the return date at libraries helps people read more books.
- Skip the parts you don’t like. This is especially helpful for non-fiction books that don’t usually have a cohesive narrative. It’s OK if you don’t read the entire book or do so consecutively.
The Reading Agency out of the UK has also developed a program called Reading Hack. Started in 2015, Reading Hack is led by 13 to 24 year olds in libraries across the country to find better ways to read. They’re connecting young readers to one another through a love of books.
