How long has it taken you to read this far? How long did it take you to read that last sentence? Everyone reads at different speeds. Generally you get faster as you get more competent in reading, until you reach a comfortable plateau.
Your reading speed can also vary depending on what you’re reading. For instance, a thriller novel may be light enough to speed through (that’s why they call them page-turners), while you would likely have to slog through reading a legal document.
Most people can read about 300 words per minute. Our comprehension is shown to significantly decrease around 1,000 words per minute. After all, your brain can only handle so much information at one time. And there’s only so fast your eyes can move.

Most people wish they could read faster. Some even attend classes or workshops on speed reading. And while there’s no proven method for allowing you to truly read at top speeds, there are some tips that can help you cram more words in your brain.
Keep in mind, speed does not always equal quality. Just because you’re consuming more content, doesn’t mean you’re comprehending or remembering it all. “Speed reading doesn’t necessarily make you a better reader,” says Steve Leveen.
You can read a full non-fiction book in a few hours, but it’s not quite the same experience as taking your time to savor the content like a good meal. If you consume too quickly, you might choke—or at least not remember exactly what you read.
